William Harley was 21 when he drew up plans for an 116cc engine which was built and equipped with a pedal cycle. Was 1901. He was accompanied by his friend Arthur Davidson, and together they worked on what was really a motorcycle. With the help of his brother Arthur, Walter, who completed the project in 1903, but the children were not satisfied with the way his first attempt, he threw the bike, but not without acquiring valuable experience on the road.

The second machine with a 405cc engine is classed by many as the first real Harley. Biggest engine and frame design meant the machine was more of a motorcycle, and was a precursor to modern motorcycle.
